Piazza Gae Aulenti
Inaugurated on 8th December 2012 and dedicated to the famous Italian architect, Piazza Gae Aulenti is the epicenter of the most modern area of Milan. This wonderful square is one of the most beautiful in the world, according to the Landscape Institute, which awarded it as one of the most beautiful for its design and environmental protection.
In between the historic center and the financial district, Piazza Gae Aulenti and the surrounding buildings are the result of the rehabilitation project of the Garibaldi, Isola e Varesine districts.
The urban complex is the work of the architect Cesar Pelli and its main core is Piazza Gae Aulenti, a circular podium that rises 6 meters above the street level. Surrounding the Square are some really amazing buildings. The most impressive is the Unicredit Tower complex, with the tallest skyscraper in Italy (231 meters high). One of the buildings that most attract the attention of visitors is “Il Bosco Verticale” The Vertical Wood, an architectural complex consisting of two towers, covered with 2,000 plant species.
The square is connected by a pedestrian walkway to Corso Como, one of the most vital streets in Milan, where there are numerous shops, restaurants and bars. The futuristic aesthetics of Gae Aulenti Square is in complete harmony with the buildings surrounding it and the lighting system of the area. When it is dark, in the square you can see a show of water, lights and sounds, activating the Solar Tree, a lighting system that uses solar energy.
Piazza Gae Aulenti is one of the places to stay in Milan. To enjoy the best views of the city, you can climb the highest tower of the Unicredit architectural complex. Along with the Navigli district, Piazza Gae Aulenti is the area of Milan with more nightlife, thanks to its discos, restaurants and fashion venues.
The easiest way to reach this district is by getting off at Stazione Garibaldi Station.
